ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ’s 2022 Summer Semester is on!Ìý Parents might find the idea of summer school difficult.Ìý “My student has already gone through a year of school. ÌýWhy do they need more?”Ìý This is a reasonable question – summer school often has a negative connotation.Ìý Our summer school programs are not meant to make students or parents feel like they have missed something; instead, we offer additional resources to help students succeed, including themed and athletic day camps, graduation credits, credit recovery, and more.

Academic Programs

Our K-12 summer school program consists of three different formats: one for elementary (grades 1-6), another for junior high (grades 7 and 8), and one for high school students (grades 9-12).

The elementary summer school program consists of daily, one-hour sessions that run from June 27 – July 15.Ìý Each course is designed to set our younger students up for success in the upcoming school year.Ìý Students can join Support for Success in math and/or reading for three weeks of intensive, targeted skill support, or they can join Prep for Success: ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ 101 for an overview of grammar, writing, cursive, planner usage, and study and organizational skills. Any of these courses are a great way for new and returning students to prep for a rewarding school year.

At the junior high level, students can join on of two six-week intensive math courses that focus on bringing students to the appropriate level needed to succeed in appropriate math level.Ìý A readiness test is administered at the conclusion of each program to ensure mastery. ÌýHigh school students can participate in a wide range of courses, including readiness classes, credit recovery classes, and fine arts credit classes.Ìý Classes are currently being offered for math and English readiness, history credit recover, and music and art history fine arts credit.

Enrichment Programs

In addition to academic courses, ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ is also hosting two exciting enrichment programs, Custer’s Art Camp and Theater Camp:

Custer’s Art Camp, taught by Mr. Greg Custer, will help students develop their drawing skills. Students will spend the week developing their draftsmanship skills while having fun and making their own works of art. Students will learn the basic methods of drawing that has made our school one of the most successful drawing programs in the state. This instruction will serve all skill levels from the beginner to advanced artist.

Theater Camp will be taught by Coach Scott, who has written four plays, acted in forty plays, and was Director or Assistant Director on fifteen plays. The camp will include pantomimes, stage direction, how to be successful in auditions, developing improvisation skills, difference between movies and plays, costumes and make-up, principles of Method Acting, introduction to public speaking, and more!

Athletic Programs

In addition to academic and enrichment programs, ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ hosts several sports camps for grade school students.Ìý There are various sports that students can participate in, including lacrosse, cheerleading, and basketball.Ìý In addition, there will be a 6-week SAQ (speed, agility, quickness) Camp that is intended to help students succeed in all athletics. There are age restrictions and specific dates for each sport listed .

Summer sports camps are the perfect complement to our summer school programs!Ìý We encourage any students who have attended our camps before or are interested in sports to attend.

Adorable little girl mimicking her father holding a pencil to her chin with a thoughtful expression as they relax together on a sofa

Some problems are simple, and we can quickly resolve them. Others are complex problems that need teamwork, ingenuity, and a significant amount of effort to solve.

The problem resolution process involves:

  • Recognizing a problem
  • Determining its source
  • Identifying and ranking potential solutions, and
  • Executing the best solution

There are several universal approaches that we may use to address problems in our lives successfully, and we may boost our confidence in our potential to achieve by establishing a set of problem-solving abilities.

Problem Solver Defined

Problem solvers look at all aspects of an issue and develops a solution that best satisfies all parties. Problem solvers also employ many of the same abilities as convergent thinkers because they must examine other aspects in addition to the initial issue.

Good problem solvers are also good thinkers. When presented with a crisis, they will not become too emotional. They see challenges as opportunities and experiences and remain unbiased when responding to problems. Fearless problem solvers know that every issue has a resolution, and they have confidence in themselves and their capabilities to discover the best remedy.

Quick and effective problem solving is an essential life skill. Problem-solving involves identifying problems, coming up with feasible solutions, implementing those solutions, and evaluating the effectiveness of the solutions.

Becoming a Problem Solver

When becoming a problem solver or helping your child become a problem solver, remember that the following four steps are essential in instilling problem-solving ethos in learners’ lives.

Identify Causation

To find a resolution to a problem, you must first determine what caused it by obtaining and analyzing data, isolating potential contributory factors, and defining what should happen to find a solution.ÌýÌýCreating a detailed list of all relevant components might help you determine which aspects are most successful in averting future problems or crises.

Make Room for Interventions

Consider the spectrum of options open to you once you’ve discovered the source of a problem. It may be essential to work with other students or peers to unearth solutions that you would not have found on your own.Ìý Keep in mind the potential repercussions of any course of action as you investigate various options.

Skills needed for this undertaking are:

  • Brainstorming
  • Imaginative problem-solving
  • Prediction
  • Forecasting
  • Designing and planning a project

Generate Solutions to the Problem

The aptitude to collect and examine evidence to make efficacious judgments or generate resolutions to problems is known as problem evaluation.

You must examine the nature of the problem and your priorities hierarchy, as well as the possible risks of implementing each option, all while considering prospective solutions to challenges.Ìý When selecting, keep in mind the potential obstacles to each solution’s implementation.

Requisite skills needed in this stage of the problem-solving journey are:

  • Analytical discussion
  • Teamwork in the production of tests corroboration
  • Prioritizing key problem-solving initiatives
  • Implementing the problem-solving plan

After you’ve decided on a plan of action, you’ll need to carry it out and assess the results. To do so, set goals for yourself and develop benchmarks to track your progress.Ìý Keeping your peers informed about any changes in your study flow or school-life pattern may also help you stay organized.

ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ Activities for High School Students

Students can utilize “visual representations” to organize their thoughts and offer proof of their reasoning. They can also indicate their approach to solving as they go through each stage.Ìý Problem-solving puzzles challenge players to solve visual or mathematical problems using critical thinking abilities.Ìý Problem-solving puzzles include activity rooms, Sudoku, and treasure hunting games.Ìý These activities aim to improve students’ thinking and decision-making abilities in groups to foster teamwork and self-confidence. The games listed below are unique problem-solving activities for high school students:

  1. Brainstorming blitz

Having students make lists pertinent to a topic might help them better understand the subject and improve problem-solving abilities.Ìý If you’re studying a historical event that didn’t go as planned, have students make a list of ways the protagonist or participants may have influenced the result.Ìý They can brainstorm independently on paper or in front of the class on a chalkboard.

  1. Collaborative problem-solving

This exercise encourages students to anonymously write down and report any problem or difficulty they are experiencing at school or at home that they cannot resolve independently.Ìý Have a student draw one of the things from the box and read it aloud once or twice a week. Then, as a class, choose the best manner for the student to address and hopefully resolve the problem.

  1. Create Scenarios for survivors’ Games

Encourage students to create circumstances that need innovative solutions to stoke their imaginations.Ìý For example, run through a scenario in which a group of schoolchildren is stuck on an island for three days with little food and water and must manufacture shelter from objects found on the island.Ìý As the problem solvers brainstorm together, encourage collaboration and vigorous debates; each child should be able to be heard by the group.

Final Thought

Children who learn to handle difficulties without resorting to rash or violent actions will better avoid conflict in the classroom and their daily lives. Problem-solving skills make students great conflict diffusers and resolvers.Ìý Problem solvers may also be better at recognizing the purpose (or lack thereof) behind other people’s behaviors. They’ll be more inclined to attach positive attributes to other people’s activities.Ìý Finally, people who have sharpened problem-solving skills are valuable in the workplace. ÌýEquipping your children with problem solving skills is equipping them for their futures. ÌýReturns to such educational investments pay off when the student can succeed in their chosen career paths.

When deciding whether or not you should enroll your child in a charter school, the biggest concern should be whether or not the school is a good fit for your child academically.

Charter schools have attracted students for more than a decade, offering a different way of learning that welcomes students of all ages. Located in urban, suburban, and rural areas around the country, charter schools have become alternatives to public education.

If you find yourself wondering, “Should I switch my child to a charter school?” consider the following:

1. What is a Charter School?

Charter schools are public schools that operate under a performance contract with a district, county office of education, or state. They have more autonomy in exchange for greater accountability for improving student achievement. The state and local school districts primarily fund charter schools. Other features include:

  • Charter schools can be tuition-free, or they can charge tuition.
  • Charter schools may revolve around a particular discipline (e.g., arts, science, and technology) or philosophy (e.g., Montessori).
  • Charter schools have the freedom to create their curriculum and to hire teachers without formal certification.
  • The admission follows a lottery system if there are more applicants than spaces available at the school.
  • Charter schools do not discriminate based on race, gender, disability status, or academic performance.

2. What Types of Charter Schools are Available?

Charter schools are diverse in their educational approach and focus, and some have a different philosophy of education than public schools. Other charters focus on STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and math), the arts, college prep, special education, etc.

3. Is Your Child Ready for a More Challenging Environment?

Suppose you’re at the point where you’re wondering if a charter school is a suitable choice for your child. It’s likely because you can see that they have a lot of potential, and you want to ensure that potential shines.

In general, charter schools provide more challenging academic environments for students ready to tackle them. They often emphasize changing curriculum in schools in core subjects like math, reading, and science at an accelerated level. In addition, they may offer a more extended school day or year than traditional public schools.

When your child seems bored at school, it’s cause for concern. Boredom is a sign that your child lacks challenge, harming their education and self-confidence.Ìý Charter schools offer a unique opportunity to challenge bright students who might get bored in traditional classrooms.

Charter schools are often able to offer more flexibility than traditional schools. For example, they might provide gifted-and-talented programs that provide extra challenges for bright students. They might also offer more AP courses and allow students to take classes at local universities for dual credit.

Charter schools are also more flexible in curriculum content and teaching styles, allowing them to customize learning experiences for individual students efficiently.

Conclusion

The best schools provide a positive and enriching environment by helping children grow, develop, and become the best versions of themselves.

ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ offers a two-week trip over the summer and two one-week trips over Spring Break that allow our high school students to see and experience countries they previously had only read about in books and saw online. ÌýAt ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ, we understand that a true leader must have real-world experience, not only book knowledge.

is sometimes referred to as leadership education because it provides the students with all of the skills a leader should personify. ÌýMoreover, our teachers and faculty members at ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ aim to create future leaders by taking students to visit historically rich places and experience the art, music, architecture, and unique cultures that reside there.

Today, we are going to see some of the places The ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ students visited in the last few years. ÌýWe are also going to talk about history, see what they learned, and see what new experience classical education can provide a student.

Students in Paris

Students Travel to Paris, France

Located in the heart of Europe, Paris is the food, fashion, and art capital of the globe. ÌýThe city is home to the Louvre, which houses some of the most incredible artwork known to man. ÌýAlthough navigating a group of classical education students through seas of tourists can be challenging, the best time to visit Paris is during the summer.

Paris | Art & Culture

The Louvre and the Eiffel Tower might be the most well-known parts of Paris, but as our classical education pupils know, the city has so many other things to offer. ÌýParis is also known for the Arc de Triomphe, and its amazing arches, the Picasso museum, and the infamous Paris Catacombs filled with real human skulls.

The Eiffel Tower | Architecture

As a part of their classic education, the students visited the Eiffel Tower to study its look and structure. Gustave Eiffel’s masterpiece wowed the students with all of its 10,000 tons of steel. ÌýAlthough most students took the lift, some even climbed to the top on foot, stepping on 1,665 steps in the process.

Students Travel to Wiltshire, England

Wiltshire might not be the most prominent travel destination, but for classical education students, it is perfect. ÌýThe quiet area is home to Stonehenge and Avebury, fascinating stone circles, which attract millions of tourists and spiritual travelers each year.

England | Art & Culture

The island’s history mainly influences art and culture in the United Kingdom. ÌýClassical education teaches us that the Catholic religion is a significant motive in their art. ÌýTraditional values are a big part of their culture, as well as the impact of the former British Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Students at the Stone Henge

The Stonehenge | Architecture

Our classical education students were delighted to visit the largest and most famous Neolithic monument in the world. ÌýThe sacred site on the Salisbury plane is stunning during the summer months. ÌýVisiting the site gives students a more significant appreciation of Stonehenge, mainly due to the stone size.

Study Abroad ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ in Rome Italy

Students Travel to Rome, Italy

Rome is known for the Pantheon, Vatican City, Trevi Fountain, and several other prominent landmarks in world history. ÌýWith 280 fountains and 900 churches, Rome is practically impossible to get to know without spending a year living there.

Rome | Art & Culture

Roman culture is a mix of fashion, the arts, architecture, and modern style. ÌýAs our classical education students saw, life in the city revolves around centuries-old traditions, which defined Rome as an eternal city. ÌýMany European customs and culture dating back to Roman times so that the city can feel familiar and exciting at the same time.

The Coliseum | Architecture

The ancient amphitheater in the center of the city is a magnificent sight for anyone with classical education. ÌýIn-person the Coliseum is a massive structure. ÌýThe arches and columns look even more extensive in person. The Tuscan order columns on the first story are particularly breath-taking.

Students Travel to Athens, Greece

Finally, our most exciting trip took our students to Greece, the birthplace of classical education. ÌýThroughout the country, visitors encounter fascinating examples of antiquity. ÌýCulture and art had a considerable influence on early Roman culture. ÌýA classical education student can easily see this just from looking at the shape and arrangement of their buildings.

Greece | Art & Culture

Through their sculptures, pottery, and temples, the Greek people incorporated “arête,” a fundamental principle of their entire culture. ÌýTo the people, the principle meant reaching their full potential and achieving excellence. ÌýThis excellence can be seen in some of their most famous artworks including The Siren Vase, the Motya Charioteer, and the Mask Agamemnon.

ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ Study Abroad Program Greece

Delphi on Mount Parnassus | Architecture

Delphi was one of the most important religious sanctuaries in ancient Greece. ÌýLocated on the top of Mount Parnassus, the temple was once home to the famous oracle of Apollo. ÌýJust like the oracle gave guidance and inspiration to ancient Greeks, the temple inspired our students to finish their classical education and travel the world looking for more knowledge.

Traveling Overseas At ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ

Book learning is only a small part of the overall experience at ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ. ÌýThe yearly trips inspire the students and allow them to see what they read about for so long. ÌýSeeing the Eiffel Tower in person gives the location meaning, and depth students would not experience otherwise.

ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ uses these trips aboard to implement not only knowledge but also the beauty and truth of the world into their students. ÌýOne of our primary goals is to help students be wholly immersed in classical studies, and visiting abroad is just one way we provide our students with a well-rounded education.

Success in school, as in life, requires several strong character virtues such as respect, integrity, self-discipline, and leadership.

Enrolling your child in a quality school with a well-rounded, challenging curriculum and encouraging your child to take part in that will challenge are essential aspects to building these character virtues.

In this article, we will go over some of the character-building extracurricular activities that ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ offers, so that you and your child can decide which ones are the best fit for them.

Engineering Opportunities

If your child is a tinkering type with an inclination to build things, they would likely be a good fit for our TARC Rocketry and/or Coding clubs.

Tarc Rocketry Club

We encourage students interested in flight, mechanics, and physics to look into our .

Constructing rockets is a fun and involved process requiring students to overcome many character-building challenges. Problem-solving, leadership, and team collaboration are just a few of the skills students will develop along the way.

It is also an impressive addition to a student’s college application and will serve them well should they go into the physical sciences.

Coding Club

Students who are inclined to computers and electronics are encouraged to look into our .

Learning to code teaches problem-solving, logical and strategic thinking, and technical skills that will serve your child for life.

Coding is also a highly in-demand skill that looks excellent on any college application and could create countless exciting career opportunities for your child in the future.

Forensics Speech & Debate Club

Students with an inclination for oratory and persuasion (speech and debate) will feel right at home in the Forensics Speech & Debate Club.

In Forensics, your child will learn how to articulate their thoughts and ideas eloquently and how to be a confident and captivating speaker — invaluable skills for any leader to have.

These skills will serve your child well in any career field they go into, but will be particularly useful should they ever go into public speaking, law, sales, or any other area where the ability to persuasively and effectively communicate is a core part of the job.

Global Studies Program

If your child desires to be international, cultured, and worldly, then our will help them accomplish that goal.

Studying abroad gives children an unforgettable and highly educational experience. It expands their world view, allows them to learn about other cultures, and immerses them in new experiences. Class trips to museums provide a fun alternative to reading history books, while delicious local foods and historic sight-seeing give students an enriching cultural experience without parallel.

Studying abroad is an excellent way for your child to develop their character. It will make them a more worldly and cultured leader, which will help them relate to others, get along with people from different cultures, and have a more sophisticated understanding of the world.

Matchwits

If your child is the competitive type who thrives under pressure, then they would be a great fit for Matchwits.

In Matchwits, students are matched against other students from competing schools to determine who can come up with the first answer to a variety of challenging questions.

Students compete in teams and work together to answer questions related to history, literature, science, language, geography, math, and the arts.

Suppose your child enjoys trivia quizzes, competitions, and game shows. In that case, there is a good chance they will excel at Matchwits, and it will provide them an excellent opportunity to practice thinking under pressure.

Student Council

For civic-minded students looking at a possible career in politics, Student Council is a fantastic opportunity to experience what it is like to be involved in government.

Candidates for ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵroom Representative run in-class elections, complete with speeches and classroom elections. Candidates for the four officer seats — President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary – run school-wide elections that culminate in an assembly where each candidate gives a speech to their student body before the big election begins.

The job of members of the Student Council is to cooperate with and serve their fellow students. Student Council is a great choice for students who want to experience what it is like to be part of a community focused on excellence and service.

Mentor Club

ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ’s , students in grades 4-8 are matched up with older mentors in grades 8-12. Mentor Club is an excellent way for the older, mentoring students to experience one-on-one tutoring and mentorship, and for the younger, mentee students to get the additional guidance they need to excel in their studies and succeed in school.

ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ has rigorous qualification standards for its mentors, and only students proven to have excellent character, stellar academics, and glowing teacher references are allowed to be mentors This ensures that our younger students get matched up with a mentor who is a shining example and an excellent role model for them.

After-School Clubs

Junior high and high school Students are given the opportunity to create and lead after-school clubs for their peers. Examples of past student-organized clubs include recycling club, chess club, table tennis, and many more!

If your child is interested in organizing and leading a club, encourage them to talk to a teacher or administrator about getting started!

National Honor Society

ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ seniors in caps and gowns during graduation ceremony.Parents play a major role in a child’s success in school, and there are many things you can do to help your child get good grades and excel in their studies.

In this article, we will go over several things you can do to give your child an advantage when they and help them succeed.

Planning & Organizing

The core of a productive homework/study routine involves plenty of planning and organization. ÌýThe more you can help your child learn the benefits of planning and organizing skills, the more easily and effectively they will manage their workload.

To start, help your child begin managing their calendar. ÌýWhenever they get an assignment, encourage them to mark the due date in the calendar to not lose track of any deadlines.Ìý You may also want to encourage your child to schedule time for homework and studying to keep track of what they need to accomplish and when.

At ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ, all students in grades K-12 are equipped with a planner at the beginning of the year to help guide them in their planning and organization.

Whatever calendar device you use, make sure to encourage your child to schedule study time and leisure time. ÌýThis accountability will help your child stay on track with their homework while ensuring they still have plenty of time left over to relax and have fun.

Also, teach your child to create lists, such as to-do lists, school supply shopping lists, etc.Ìý Crossing out completed items on lists like this can be a relief to children and offers the satisfaction of having successfully finished tasks.

The goal is to make your child’s life easier by keeping an organized schedule and planning ahead of time.Ìý Keep it simple, offer your help, and explain to your child that by taking the time to plan and organize, they will excel in school while also having more time left over for fun and play!

Create A Learning Space

One of the most powerful things you can do to support your child in their studies is to help them create a learning space within your home dedicated solely to the purpose of studying and working on homework.

There are several key factors for creating the ideal learning space:

1.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Find a Quiet Place

The first step is to find a quiet area where your child can concentrate. ÌýIdeally, this might be a spare room, but it can be their bedroom or any other distraction-free part of the house.

Consider experimenting with white noise or instrumental background music if it helps your child to focus better. ÌýFor some children, this helps tune out noises and improves concentration, but every child is different, and you will need to work together to determine what works best.

2.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Eliminate Distractions

There should be no distractions in the study space or anything that can interrupt your child’s concentration.

Children are surrounded by distractions in smartphone notifications, social media, TV, video games, etc. These distracting influences have a destructive effect on a child’s ability to concentrate on their studies.Ìý Encourage your child to clear away potential distractions from their study space. ÌýPhones, TVs, computers, tablets, and any other electronic device that is not needed for learning should be turned off and put away.

Also, be aware of any other possible distractions such as pets, and make sure to inform siblings and other family members not to interrupt your child during study time.

3.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Keep All Equipment Nearby

You will want to keep your child’s learning space stocked and equipped with everything they will need for their studies.

Include a desk or other flat surface with ample space for their books and supplies, as well as a comfortable chair they can sit in for a while without getting uncomfortable.Ìý Also ensure that they have easy access to all the supplies they need — such as notebooks, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, calculators, rulers, etc.

4.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Keep it Neat and Organized

Encourage your child to keep their learning space neat and clutter-free to create an optimal environment for productivity and learning.Ìý Explain to your child the importance of staying organized and consider offering them a meaningful reward each week if they keep their space neat and clean.

5.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Add a Fun, Personal Touch

Make your child’s learning space feel inviting by encouraging them to decorate it with their favorite colors, posters, artwork, movie, or video game themes.

This is a place your child will be spending a lot of time learning and getting important work done, so it is important to make it as inviting as possible so that your child feels excited to work there.

Tutoring or Mentoring

Tutoring or mentoring can help significantly improve your child’s academic performance and grades. If a child is struggling, the increased competence and confidence they will acquire can dramatically boost self-esteem.

We encourage parents to be the child’s first option as a tutor or mentor. The most successful students often have parents who play an active role in their education and closely participate in their academic life.

However, a parent might not always be able to provide all the academic support and guidance their child needs, and in these cases, a tutor or mentor can be a great way to help your child succeed in school.

Many schools, including ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ, offer in-school or extracurricular tutoring and mentoring programs.Ìý If you are still deciding on a school for your child, make sure to ask about program availability.

Balance Fun, Breaks, & Study Time

It’s essential for children to take regular breaks during study time to stay fresh and focused while learning.

Encourage your child to balance study and free time, and make sure your child is not exhausted by an overwhelming study schedule. The key is to challenge and gently push your child to grow, but not so hard that they get exhausted or burnt out.

Parental Support

One of the most important things you can do for your child is to show them constant interest and support in their academic and personal life.Ìý By making an effort to play an active role in your child’s education now, you show them that you care and that they can turn to you whenever they need help or guidance in the future.

It can be incredibly beneficial to take 20 minutes to put your phone away and talk to them after each school day. Ask them about their day, and actively listen to their response.Ìý This small daily habit will go a long way in letting your child know that you care to be involved in their academic life and that you are there to support them.

ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ Teacher reads to hear kindergarten students sitting on the floor in a semi-circleAll children can start school wherever they are at!Ìý Great teachers can teach children at any skill level, and ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ offers achievement-based grouping to ensure that all children receive an education based on their specific skill level, without feeling like they are too far behind or too far ahead.

However, there are some basic skills that you can teach your child now to ensure that they are as prepared as possible for their first day at school!

The following are some helpful skills to teach children before entering kindergarten:

  • How to identify individual letters of the alphabet (most libraries and bookstores have books designed specifically for teaching children the alphabet).
  • How to properly grip a pencil, marker, or crayon (with the index finger and thumb guiding the tip).
  • How to spell their first name.
  • How to count from one to ten (most libraries and bookstores also have children’s books that teach counting).
  • How to use arts and crafts tools such as scissors, tape, glue, and paint.
  • Organizational skills such as the ability to classify objects based on size and shape.
  • The confidence to go to the bathroom on their own and clean up after themselves without needing help.
  • The ability to get themselves dressed.
  • The ability to follow directions.
  • The ability to clean up after themselves.
  • The ability to sit through a story and listen without interrupting.
  • The ability to get along with other children.
  • The ability to cooperate and share with others.
  • Good table manners and proper eating habits.
  • Feeling comfortable being away from parents for extended periods during the day.

Most children will not check off every item on this list on their first day of kindergarten, and that is okay! Don’t put too much pressure on your child or yourself trying to establish these skills before the first day.

How to Help Your Child Develop Skills

A little encouragement can go a long way!Ìý Set aside time with your child each day to teach them some of the skills mentioned above. ÌýEven if it is only 20 minutes per day, the time you invest in teaching your child these skills will set them up for success when they start school.

The main goal should be to teach your child autonomy — to wean them from feeling entirely dependent on you.Ìý For example, carrying their backpack, tying their shoes, and zipping up their jacket are valuable skills for your child to develop.Ìý As trivial as these skills might seem, having a sense of autonomy will serve your child well in kindergarten and set a great precedent for the future.

Helpful Routines to Establish

To build literacy and language skills, we encourage parents to establish a reading routine with their children.Ìý Decide on a scheduled reading time, and sit down with your child to read for 20 minutes at that time each day to build strong reading habits.

Reading time can be at bedtime or any other time of the day.Ìý The most important thing is that it becomes a part of your daily routine.Ìý This will ensure that your child gets regular practice and makes consistent progress.

To make reading a fun and exciting activity that your child looks forward to, we recommend letting them choose which book they would like to read!Ìý Allowing children to decide which book they want to read will make them feel like reading is their own voluntary choice, rather than a chore that is imposed upon them.Ìý As such, they tend to be more engaged and less resistant when reading time comes around.

Additionally, having a good bedtime routine is essential to your child getting a good night’s sleep so that they can feel rested and recharged the next day.Ìý By having a specific bedtime every night, your child’s circadian rhythms will adjust to their sleep schedule, and they will naturally feel sleepy when it comes time to go to bed.

We suggest following a predictable order of activities before bedtime, such as taking a bath, putting on pajamas, brushing and flossing teeth, and then reading a bedtime story.Ìý No matter what bedtime activities you choose, consistency is key, and your child will start to associate this routine with sleep, which will make it much easier when you put them to bed.

If you plan on registering your child for kindergarten soon, there are several “best practices” you can follow to prepare your child for school ahead of time. This article will go over some general guidelines you can follow to prepare your child for Kindergarten.

Reading Routines

To build literacy and language skills, we encourage parents to establish a reading routine with their children. ÌýDecide on a scheduled reading time, and sit down with your child to read for 20 minutes at that time each day to build strong reading habits.

Reading time can be at bedtime or any other time of the day. ÌýThe most important thing is that it becomes a part of your daily routine. ÌýThis will ensure that your child gets regular practice and makes consistent progress.

To make reading a fun and exciting activity that your child looks forward to, we recommend letting them choose which book they would like to read! ÌýAllowing children to decide which book they want to read will make them feel like reading is their own voluntary choice, rather than a chore imposed upon them. ÌýAs such, they tend to be more engaged and less resistant when reading time comes around.

Establish a Bedtime Routine

Having a good bedtime routine is essential to your child getting a good night’s sleep so that they can feel rested and recharged the next day. ÌýBy having a specific bedtime every night, your child’s circadian rhythms will adjust to their sleep schedule, and they will naturally feel sleepy when it comes time to go to bed.

We suggest following a predictable order of activities before bedtime, such as taking a bath, putting on pajamas, brushing and flossing teeth, and then reading a bedtime story. ÌýNo matter what bedtime activities you choose, consistency is key, and your child will start to associate this routine with sleep, which will make it much easier when you put them to bed.

Create a Learning Space

We suggest creating a learning space, a designated place where your child can complete assignments, focus on projects, and study for your child within your home.

Making your child’s learning space fun and inviting will make them excited to go there. ÌýAllow your child to decorate the space with their drawings, favorite stuffed animals, etc., to make it feel more inviting — as long as it does not distract from their studying!

Remove Distractions

It is important to remove potential distractions from your child’s learning space so that they can focus.Ìý If your child has a phone or tablet, ask them to turn it off while in the learning space, and make sure the TV is off too.

Also, ensure that siblings and other family members know not to interrupt them while they are in the learning space.Ìý If you have pets that could be distracting, consider keeping them out of the area when learning is in session.

Establish Good ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵwork/Study Habits

It is helpful to establish good study habits before your child begins kindergarten.Ìý Teachers will often assign worksheets, reading, and/or crafts to make at home, and your child will be prepared to complete assignments at home if a homework/study routine is established beforehand.

Start by working with your child on an age-appropriate activity, such as writing their ABCs, making crafts, or teaching them how to spell basic words!

Encourage Play Time & Mental Breaks

With young children, it is especially important to set aside time for breaks. Meal breaks, playtime, and exercise breaks outdoors are great ways to help your child stay fresh and alert for their learning sessions.

Go Shopping for School Supplies

When it is time to go shopping for school supplies, take your child on a trip to the store with you and allow them to pick out their own supplies.Ìý Including your child on this school shopping trip makes it a fun adventure for them, and they will be excited to use their new equipment on their first day of school!

Always Ask Them About Their Day

It is important that you sit down with your child every day after school to discuss how their day went and listen to them.Ìý This quality time is important for your child’s development and should not be neglected. It shows them that you care about being involved in their school life and gives them the opportunity to confide in you and get your guidance if they need it.
